Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Stock preparation
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Large chest located under the forming fabric, used to collect white water.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  The details of white water collection and treatment vary from one machine to another, but all have in common the direct recirculation of the greater part of the richer white water. So, in practice, the first-pass retention is based on the solid flow out of the headbox (which is accurately known) and the solid flow into the wire pit (where the flow rate and consistency can be readily measured). The error of ignoring the solids in the other white water streams is relatively small.
