Definition:  A type of on-machine calender that utilizes a roll with a soft, pliable, elastic cover that nips against a roll with a standard hard surface, to improve smoothness without giving high gloss and to enhance general printability of printing and writing papers.
Definition source:  EN 13
Context:  The soft nip calender (SCC - Soft Compact Calender) which is referred to later goes a long way to resolving the problem of local densification that is an unavoidable feature of traditional calenders having hard, metal-to-metal nips (hard nip calender). The introduction of resilient covered rolls created a wider and therefore lower compressive stress in the nip, reducing local densification whilst retaining caliper. This results in a better surface for the reception of inks during the printing process.
