Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Stock preparation
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Equipment for mechanical treatment of pulp fibers consisting of a rotating conical plug (rotor) and a stationary conical housing (stator), each fitted with metal bars oriented length-wise. The fibres flow parallel to the bars. The relative position of the plug determines the clearance of the bars and controls the amount of work done on the fibers. Conical refiners can be differentiated into low-angle types (Jordans) and high-angle types (Claflins).
Definition source:  EN 9
Context:  Conical refiner. This was the first design able to refine a continuous flow (as distinct from a batch). The rotor (plug) is usually a truncated cone, inset with bars (filling), which rotates on a horizontal axis within a conical stator (shell) that provides the opposing set of bars. (A lava plug may be used where hydration, rather than fiber cutting, is required). The stock enters at the narrow end and is thrown out at the wider end by centrifugal force. Consistency is 3.5-6%.
