Winding

Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Finishing operations
Grammatical category:  Simple term
Grammar notes:  Uncountable
Definition:  Process by which parent rolls are converted into smaller rolls of various widths and diameters by means of the winder.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  As shown in Figure 5.2, the first reel-up is often the final papermaking operation, which is then followed by slitting and re-reeling (winding), sheeting or conversion; or it might be followed by off-machine coating and/or calendering operations. Since off-machine operations are costly in terms of extra reel handling and greater loss of paper as broke, mills generally try to carry out as many operations as possible on-machine. Nonetheless, because off-machine processing offers the advantages of flexibility, particularly with operating speed, and fewer problems during grade changes, it is often preferred or technically necessary in spite of its disadvantages.
