Definition:  Pigment used in coating colour formulations, characterized by a high opacifying power and by the capacity of absorbing ultraviolet radiation thus rendering optical brightening agents ineffective.

Context:  Titanium dioxide and plastic pigments, when used, usually comprise only up to 10% of the total pigment. Titanium dioxide is valued for very high light scattering power and whiteness.
