Definition:  Sizing of the paper web by means of surface application of a suitable agent, most commonly a starch solution.

Context:  Surface sizing increases the overall strength of the paper as well as its surface strength by partly impregnating the sheet with solutions of polymers (e.g. starch) before the final drying of the paper. (By contrast, internal or wet-end sizing is achieved by adding appropriate chemicals during stock preparation, as discussed in Section 4.3.4.)
