Context: |
|
The temperature at which the paper is calendered also has a significant effect on the final paper properties. This is due to thermo-softening behaviour of the styrene-butadiene latex used as the binder. At higher temperatures, the latex is more deformable, thus allowing the coating structure to be more easily compressed. Additionally, the deformable nature and the flow of the heat-softened latex under pressure means that the porosity of the coating surface can be significantly reduced during calendering. |
