Context:
The size press is probably still the most common on-machine coater. Its main function is to apply non-pigmented, film forming materials such as modified starches, SCMC (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose), PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol), etc. to improve printing and other properties of the web. When a pigmented coating is used it is normally for pre-coating to apply low coat weights. In recent years the size press has been converted into a very useful coating unit by the addition of various metering devices.
