Definition:  High-impulse press in which the press nip is formed between a rotating roll and a stationary concave shoe. An impermeable polymer belt is drawn across the shoe on an oil film and carries the press felt and paper through the nip.
Definition source:  EN 9
Context:  Under a wide range of combinations of pressure and time, the moisture content reached is determined largely by the pressure impulse (Figure 10.7). Because the maximum applied pressure (say, 6-10 MN/m² average pressure) is limited by the tendency of the wet web to be structurally damaged (“crushed”), the obvious alternative way to increase dryness is to lengthen the time of pressure application. The nip can be widened by using a double-felted nip, a softer roll cover, larger roll diameters or a shoe press.
