Definition:  Pigment used in coating colour formulations which improves the whiteness and gloss of the coating colour, but which demands a large quantity of binders.

Context:  Satin white (prepared from slaked lime and alum) is little used in North America because a glossy-coated sheet can more easily be obtained using less troublesome alternative pigment combinations.
