Roll coating
Table 4.3.1.2
Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Surface treatments
Subdomain (3rd level):  Coating
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Uncountable
Definition:  Method of coating characterized by the use of rolls for applying, metering and distributing coating colour.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  The roll coating operation is rather more gentle than the scraping action of the blade (see later) and so the new film presses find favour in mills where the base sheet is relatively weak (e.g. containing high levels of filler). The roll application is more of a contour coater than the blade and so the quality of the final coating is good while the production rate is high.
