Definition:  A machine, usually equipped with discs or with a cone and plug, intended for the treatment of fibrous materials in an aqueous medium to give them some of the properties needed for the manufacture of paper with the necessary characteristics.

Context:  The modern refiner was developed from the beater and has a similar mechanical action, but operates continuously on stock supplied to it. Thus, the required structural changes to the fibers must be achieved in one pass between a pair of plates, or in two or more passes between pairs of plates in one machine or in two or more refiners in series.
