Definition:  Coating process that consists in applying the precoat on the base paper.

Context:  High-quality printing papers are coated (by using clay and other pigments) several times. In such a case, the coater is off-machine (not integral to the paper machine). The paper machine may also have an on-machine coater for precoating.
