Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking

Subdomain (3rd level):  Coating
Grammatical category:  Simple term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Mineral substances used in coating colour formulations, whose function is to fill in the void areas of the base paper, so as to smooth its surface and control ink receptivity during printing.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  Coating color properties are largely controlled by selecting the types, grades and quantities of the pigments and binders. However, certain properties must be modified or optimized, and therefore, it is necessary to add small quantities of other chemicals to the color (and often to sizing solutions, as well). Addition rates are usually between 0.2 and 2 parts per 100 parts of pigment.
