In recent years the functionality of size press equipment has been greatly expanded. This equipment is now also used for pigmented coatings and other specialized surface applications (2). In particular, pigment application with the MSP is receiving a high level of attention. A confusing array of names are applied to this technology including film coating, pigmentizing and wash coating, usually according to coat weight. With this technology, some of the pigment penetrates into the sheet, and overall pigment pickup can be as high as 10 g/m² per side. The treatment is sufficient to significantly improve printing properties, and these so-called pigmented papers are finding a market with customers who are reluctant to pay a high premium for conventionally coated or supercalendered grades. |
