Definition:  Resistance of the surface of paper to lifting or pulling away of the fibres or coating when being printed. It is a measure of the surface strength or internal bonding strength of the paper.

Context:  In the machine direction the paper will have superior tensile strength, stiffness and pick resistance whilst in the cross direction it will have greater resistance to tear alongside a greater tendency to dimensional instability in the presence of moisture.
