Context:  The features of two conventional press nips, a long-nip press and an extended-nip press are shown in Figure 10.1. Following the nip, water held in the recesses of the upper roll is thrown clear. The press felts have long runs (~ 20 - 40 m) around guide rolls and tension control rolls, and are subjected to cleaning showers (sometimes incorporating detergents) which wash out adhering fibers, fillers and fines transferred in the nip. Finally, suction boxes remove water from the felt before the felt re-enters the nip.
