The use of an applicator nozzle with size press rolls was first demonstrated on a pilot machine in 1982. This technology developed rapidly in subsequent years, and metering size presses (MSPs) are now the equipment of choice for high-speed machines in North America and Europe. In most designs, short-dwell coater heads are used to supply the sizing solution and either a bent blade or rod is incorporated into the head to control the wet film thickness (Figure 18-3). |
