Definition:  Groundwood pulp produced by mechanically grinding logs or wood chips. It is used mainly for newsprint and as an ingredient of base stock for lower grade printing papers.

Context:  The woodfree grades are not usually made below 80 g/m² because opacity deteriorates in low weights. With the addition of mechanical pulp however these papers can be produced down to 50 g/m². They are referred to as lightweight coated papers (LWC) and are much used by magazine publishers.
