Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Surface treatments
Subdomain (3rd level):  Coating
Grammatical category:  Simple term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Additives used in coating colour formulations, whose function is to make coating colour flow more freely during its preparation and application as well as to lubricate the dried coating during the following treatments.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  Coating color properties are largely controlled by selecting the types, grades and quantities of the pigments and binders. However, certain properties must be modified or optimized, and therefore, it is necessary to add small quantities of other chemicals to the color (and often to sizing solutions, as well). Addition rates are usually between 0.2 and 2 parts per 100 parts of pigment. These additives function in a variety of ways including:
- dispersants for the pigment suspensions;
- viscosity modifiers, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose and starches;
- crosslinking agents for starch based coatings which increase wet rub resistance, particularly for offset papers, e.g. glyoxal, urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde resins;
- lubricants like calcium stearate and polyethylene based emulsions which assist cutting and slitting and reduce dusting in those operations and in calendering;
- chemicals to modify pH, color, foaming tendencies, resistance to micro-organisms etc.
