Context: |
|
Lignin is a complex molecule that ’cements’ the fibers together in the tree at the middle lamella. To free the individual fibers during pulping, the lignin is either dissolved by chemicals (during chemical pulping, when it turns brown) or softened by heat (during mechanical pulping). During bleaching, it is partly removed and partly brightened. Since lignin is also bonded to hemicellulose, within the fiber wall (both primary wall and secondary wall), the removal of one without the other is difficult. |
