Definition:  Device intended for the application of coating colour on high-speed coaters, characterized by a slit through which an excess of coating colour is applied directly to the base paper and is subsequently removed.

Context:  As coater speed increases, so must the amount of coating applied by the applicator roll. This has motivated recent developments in the jet applicator, which either removes a controlled amount of the excess color it applies (eg: premetering applicator - see diagram), or applies just the desired amount (free jet applicator, fountain applicator).
