Subdomain (2nd level):  Printability
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Instrument for testing the printability of paper, formed by an inking device and a printing unit, that is to say a cylindrical roller which carries ink to the paper.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  The IGT Tester (IGT Reprotest, piFa = Paper Instrumentation for Asia) simulates the printing process in a simplified way. Several tests can be performed on it, the main tests being:
- IGT dry pick. The paper sample is fixed to the segment, and a viscous reference ink applied to a roller. A pendulum, which is fixed to the segment, is released, and the segment and roller accelerate (in contact) until the surface is ripped off the paper by the tackiness of the ink. The speed at which this occurs (in cm/s at a stated ink viscosity) is the dry pick, and is a measure of the paper’s surface strength.
- IGT wet pick test measures wet rub resistance to abrasion by an offset litho blanket, or to picking from the tack of a subsequent color ink application, etc.
- IGT ink absorption (ink receptivity). A known volume of colored ink is syringed onto the roller and the pendulum released (as above). The length of the elliptical ’print’ produced is a measure of the resistance to ink absorption.
