Definition:  First element of the paper machine that receives the diluted stock and provides uniform and even flow across the width of the forming fabric or in the gap formed by the two wires of a twin wire former.

Context:  A dominating feature of the papermaking process illustrated in Figure 5.2 is the steady removal of water from stock entering the headbox at, say, 0.8% consistency until the paper is reeled at about 95% solids.
