Definition:  Fine hairlike structure contained in pulp that is dispersed in water and dried, in order to form the mechanical structure of the paper.

Context:  Mechanical pulp yields over 90% of the wood as fibre is produced by forcing debarked logs, about two metres long, and hot water between enormous rotating steel discs with teeth that literally tear the wood apart.

Notes:  Fibres are generally extracted from softwood and hardwood, but they can also be obtained from annual plants, such as kenaf, sorghum, flax and cotton. This type of fibre is not used for the manufacture of coated printing paper.
