The dryer fabric holds the paper firmly against the cylinder surface and, hence, increases heat transfer at the cylinder-paper interface (refer to Figure 11.10). In this respect, fabric design can be important. Any of the surface patterns shown in Figure 11.4.3 is thought to produce a similar pattern of contact between the paper web and the cylinder surface. Therefore, the paper beneath the contact areas is under pressures considerably higher than the average pressure while the areas between are under much lower pressures. The high-pressure areas are larger between the paper and the cylinder surface than between the fabric and the paper because of some leveling through the web. While the effect of uneven pressure is probably negligible with grades over say 200 g/m², the differences in the heat transfer coefficient may become significant for lighter grades if inappropriate fabric designs are used or fabrics become dirty (22). |
