Definition:  Ability of paper to retain its dimensions in all directions under stress of handling and changes of humidity.

Context:  Few papers are made solely from mechanical woodpulp. It is more usual for the furnish to be enhanced by the addition of some chemical pulp to add strength and rigidity. Mechanical pulps produced by the original method of ‘grinding’ are often described as groundwood mechanical or wood-containing grades. Papers made mainly from such pulp are relatively cheap, print well, have good bulk, opacity and dimensional stability.
