Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Uncountable
Definition:  Direction perpendicular to web travel on the paper machine.
Definition source:  EN 9
Context:  Although not discernible to the eye, very marked differences in physical properties exist between the length and breadth of a sheet of paper. For this reason, paper is said to be anisotropic. The direction of the sheet which was parallel to its direction of travel in the course of manufacture is described as the machine direction. A line drawn at right angles to this denotes the cross direction and paper may be cut so that either of these can correspond to the length or breadth of the sheet. In the machine direction the paper will have superior tensile strength, stiffness and pick resistance whilst in the cross direction it will have greater resistance to tear alongside a greater tendency to dimensional instability in the presence of moisture.
