Table 4.3.1.1
Pronunciation
Subdomain (1st level):  Papermaking
Subdomain (2nd level):  Surface treatments
Subdomain (3rd level):  Coating
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Countable
Definition:  Part of a coater which applies, meters and smooths coating colour on the paper surface.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  All the coating processes can be broken down into a number of component operations. They are:
(i) Excess fluid mix is applied to the base sheet
(ii) Part of the fluid phase of the mix is absorbed by the base
(iii) Because of this redistribution of liquid, the layer of mix immediately adjacent to the base becomes immobile.
(iv) The base plus coating mix then enters a device that re-arranges or removes the fluid part of the mix. This operation is referred to as metering.
(v) After the coated base paper leaves the coating head there should be enough “fluidity” remaining in the mix for unevenness to ’self level’ by unaided flow.
