Definition:  Surface treatment of paper consisting in applying one or more layers of coating colour to one or both sides of paper, in order to improve its aspect and its printability.

Context:  Coated printing papers are used mainly in magazines, catalogues and commercial printing grades, with wood-frees used in those products generally intended to be in use for a long time or kept indefinitely. The formulation of the applied coating color must correspond to the nature of the base paper, its swelling characteristics and penetrability during coating and its compressibility during printing.
