Subdomain (3rd level):  Coating
Grammatical category:  Complex term
Grammar notes:  Uncountable
Definition:  Substance obtained from cellulose and used in small quantities as a binder in coating colour formulations, in order to favour water retention.
Definition source:  Brewer (2003)
Context:  The main advantages of CMC are:
(i) Good viscosity stability
(ii) Good dispersing action
(iii) High binding efficiency
(iv) Good colour
(v) High retention of optical brightening agents (OBAs)
(vi) It helps prevent excessive binder migration from all-latex mixes
Advantage (v), namely the ability of CMC to carry optical brightening agents, means that it is often used in all-latex mixes because latex does not carry OBAs at all well.
