Definition:  Protein material obtained from coagulated cow’s milk, used as a binder in coating colour formulations.

Context:  Casein was one of the original coating binders and between 1900 and 1950 was the most widely used of all the binders in the paper and board industry. This popularity was due to a number of reasons including: (i) It was readily available. (ii) It was moderate in price. (iii) It is easily made water resistant. (iv) It has a stable viscosity at medium solids. (v) It has good film forming properties (vi) It goes into solution at low temperature. (vii) Coatings containing casein calender to a good gloss.
