Context:  The usual binder for precoats is mainly or entirely starch, but combinations are used for most coating applications. Some commonly used formulations are (per 100 parts of pigment):
- 12 to 16 parts synthetic latex with about 1 part carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as a thickener
- 4 to 14 parts synthetic latex with 3 to 10 parts of a starch-based co-binder, say 11 to 19 parts in total, all on a dry basis.
Together with the additives described below, the overall solid contents range from 50 to 70%, usually about 60 - 65%.
