Context:
Precoats use coarser grade pigments than topcoats, and the pigment of choice is usually calcium carbonate. In fact, calcium carbonate of various grades is the predominant pigment in the majority of colors, comprising 50 - 100% with the balance usually of clay. The trend is to use greater proportions of calcium carbonate in colors applied to wood-free base papers. However, some colors use 100% clay.
