Definition:  Early method of coating in which the coating colour is first applied to the sheet by an applicator roll and then spread and worked into the sheet by means of fixed, oscillating or rotary brushes. This method is now little used.

Context:  At the present time brush coating is only used to a very limited degree, mainly because of the following limitations:
(i) The maximum speed is no more than 130 metres/minute, the average being nearer 75 metres/minute
(ii) The brushes wear quite quickly and must be replaced or trimmed at frequent intervals.
(iii) It is difficult to control coat weight.
