Definition:  Components of coating colour that bind the pigment particles together and to the base paper, keep them in dispersion and have a great influence on the rheological properties of the coating color.

Context:  The selection of a binder system (i.e. a particular combination and addition level of binders) must take into account the resultant rheological properties of the coating color (discussed in Section 14.4) and how these properties affect coater runnability. The choice also depends on relative cost, and how the binder system affects the properties of the paper, which may be produced to suit a particular printing process.
