Definition:  Dyes characterized by a high tinting power, an excellent affinity for lignin and low lightfastness.

Context:  Basic dyes are cationic. They are suitable for unbleached chemical and mechanical pulps, because of their affinity for lignin. They give bright colors, but with poor light fastness. Eg: Basazol (BASF), Astra, Verona (Bayer), Cartazine (Clariant), Sevron (Crompton), Kenazol, Methic (Stahl Industrial Colorants).
