All felts have a woven mesh base and most have a needled batt above it. The base, of single or multilayer construction, has the strength to operate under MD tension without distortion and also provides sufficient void volume to hold water which remains in the felt leaving the nip. The yarns or monofilaments making up the base meshes are of relatively large diameter and the base compresses only slightly in the nip. Design objectives for the base are the correct void volume, a fine enough upper surface to prevent the surface structure impressing the paper through the batt (felt marking), ability to withstand repeated compressions without failing, and not blocking up with fine material. |
