Definition:  Rotating roll which picks up a layer of coating colour (e.g., from a pan or by contact with an intermediary pickup roll) and then contacts the sheet, and thereby transfers color to the sheet.

Context:  All methods of coating require a means of:
- Applying coating color to the paper, which is done by either:
- An applicator roll, which applies excess color to the web at a flooded nip.
- A jet applicator. It either removes a controlled amount of the excess color it applies (eg: premetering blade coater), or applies just the desired amount (free jet applicator, fountain applicator).
- Spray nozzles, which apply just the amount desired. Eg: OptiSpray Coater (Metso Paper/Paper).
