Context: |
|
The air knife coater can operate in three ways: (i) To “brush” or smooth the coating layer. In this case most of the metering has been carried out at the application stage and the air knife is left to level the coating. If taken to the extreme, however, there is a risk of severe patterning. (ii) The air curtain acts as a barrier and prevents the onward travel of any excess coating mix. This is employed when very fluid mixes are in use such as the coating of dyeline base with diazo compounds. The excess mix is not removed as a spray but runs down the sheet into the applicator tray. Being fluid, any entrained air comes out of the mix very quickly. (iii) The normal method of operation is a combination of (i) and (ii). In this mode the air knife is one of the most versatile of all the coaters. |
